

ML Commercial Services are a growing business based in North Wales (but covering the North West too), specialising in commercial vehicle support. They are not a typical ‘mechanic’, instead focusing on specialist servicing, repairs and hire of HGVs and trailers. For this reason, they were looking for a website to showcase the specialist work that they provide and increase enquiries from a specific target audience i.e. not those simply searching ‘mechanic in North Wales’, but rather terms such as ‘HGV servicing North Wales’.
The business had an existing website which was around 5 pages, with minimal content and a few photos. Whilst this ‘DIY’ website had done it’s job in the early days, Matthew (Owner) came to Wattage Media following a referral by another of our clients. We arranged an initial meeting to discuss his ideas and then turned this into a bespoke proposal, advising on a beneficial page structure so that each service could have a dedicated page.
Once we made sure that the proposed solution was the best way forward for Matt’s business, we moved into the research stage. This involved looking at competitors and identifying areas for improvement. It was clear that there were existing pages out there targeting terms such as ‘HGV mechanic’ which would be important, whilst actually those looking to use ML Commercial Services would more likely be searching terms such as ‘hgv brake testing’, ‘bulk blower repairs’ or ‘hgv spare parts’; this was why we opted for a 15+ page site, so that we could effectively target the individual services with a dedicated page and contact form for ease of quotations.
Once we had discussed the research findings and agreed page structure, we moved onto design. This started with a blank canvas (no templates used for web design here!) and we mapped out a header/footer and then individual website page wireframes for layouts. The colour scheme followed the existing branding but we also integrated new photography that Matt had invested in. Having high-quality professional photography for a new website design project makes the world of difference! It means we can include the images throughout the site, as well as within the website design backgrounds for example e.g. the homepage imagery immediately shows the brand and what it’s all about. As they say, a picture paints a thousand words!
As mentioned above, ML Commercial Services were using a ‘DIY website builder’ tool with a custom domain name previously. This meant that we dealt with the transfer fully, leaving Matt focused on running ML Commercial Services whilst knowing we had everything in hand. WordPress is out choice when it comes to websites, given that it powers over 42.6% of the worlds websites according to W3Techs research!
The benefits of WordPress are that it’s so widely used, meaning it’s well supported and comes with lot’s of flexibility to add plugins/additional features (even down to multiple language support).
DIY builders can be okay for the very early days of starting a business, but moving to a bespoke website design with a content management system such as WordPress provides endless benefits – not least the chance to ensure the website is built around your business needs, rather than trying to customise a template to suit! Additionally, it means we can build the website as being search-friendly from day one… all of which is standard as part of any web design project with ourselves.
